The unknown unknown: Freemasonry.
The aim of this lecture is to quite simply present what Freemasonry is all about. In the Belgian context this society is largely unknown and veiled in secrecy. In this lecture I want to lift a corner of that veil. The lecture consists of five parts: (1) what can be known about freemasonry, (2) what are the historical origins, (3) what is the situation in Belgium, (4) what does a freemason actually do and what role do rituals and symbols play, and (5) what are my personal experiences after 35 years.
Biography of Prof. J.P. Van Bendegem.
Jean Paul Van Bendegem is a retired professor at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and guest professor at Ghent University. He is a mathematician and philosopher, focusing on the philosophy of mathematics. His teaching was mainly about logic and philosophy of science. He was also the director of the Center for Logic and Philosophy of Science at the VUB. Outside of academia he participates in the public debate through books, articles, columns and lectures. He has been a freemason for 35 years.
